Keep Moving, Stay Young!

👋 Hi, I’m Susanne Sharrard, a yoga teacher who believes movement is the key to staying strong, mobile, and feeling our best. 

I’m a mom, a grandmother, wife - and teaching yoga is one of my greatest joys. I teach chair yoga, chair Pilates, and gentle weight lifting, helping women stay active and confident in their bodies—at any age.

So let’s talk about movement—not as something we should do, but as something that keeps us feeling alive. 

Our bodies are designed to move, and when we do, amazing things happen:

✅ Our joints stay lubricated (hello, natural WD-40—aka synovial fluid!)
✅ Our muscles stay strong 💪
✅ We feel more energized and balanced
✅ Pain and stiffness melt away

 Yoga vs. Strength Training – Why Both Matter!

🧘 Yoga is all about flexibility, balance & mobility – essential for staying active in daily life.
🏋️ Lifting weights builds muscle & bone strength – key for preventing osteoporosis.

Both are important, but yoga is gentler on the joints and helps with circulation, posture, and relaxation—which is why it’s a perfect complement to strength training.



Don’t Forget Your Hands & Feet! 👐🦶

Many people focus on big muscle groups, but we also need to care for our hands and feet—especially if you have arthritis or stiffness. In my classes, we do gentle exercises to:

✅ Improve grip strength (so opening jars is easier!)
✅ Increase circulation (goodbye, cold hands and feet!)
✅ Relieve stiffness and pain (great for arthritis!)

Improved Posture & Back Health 🪑✨

 

 

Many people don’t realize how much poor posture affects their neck, back, and even digestion. Sitting for long periods can lead to slouching, tight shoulders, and lower back pain. Chair yoga helps by:

✅ Strengthening your core and back muscles for better support
✅ Opening up the chest and shoulders to counteract hunching
✅ Encouraging deep breathing, which improves circulation and energy levels

“Uncovering the Truth About ‘Gluten-Free’ 

and Rethinking Recipes”

A Personal Journey of Love, Challenges, and Culinary Innovation (Part 2)

In my last article, I shared how caring for my sister transformed my kitchen into a testing lab, where I reimagined recipes to accommodate her complex dietary needs. Today, I want to take you deeper into the journey—into the challenges I faced navigating the world of so-called "safe"; foods and how it pushed me to rethink everything I knew about
cooking.


Let me tell you about my sister. She’s lactose, fructose, and wheat intolerant, with three major colon issues that rule out foods that can cause gas or anything with skins that might get stuck. It’s not just about avoiding gluten—it’s about understanding how every single ingredient impacts her health.


Here’s the kicker: While she isn’t gluten intolerant or diagnosed with celiac disease, wheat is her kryptonite. That means she can only eat gluten-free bread. But trying to explain that distinction to people—especially in care homes or nursing facilities—is a whole other battle.
“Why can’t she just eat regular bread?” they ask. The reality? Almost all bread, even white bread, contains some form of wheat. And for someone like her, that’s simply not an option. Gluten-free bread, made with alternatives like rice flour, is the only safe choice. But here’s where things get tricky—did you know that "gluten-free"; doesn’t
always mean what it claims?

The term "gluten-free"; is often more of a marketing gimmick than a guarantee. There aren’t strict regulations on how much gluten needs to be removed for a product to earn that label. Gluten-free cookies? Many of them aren’t completely gluten-free, and anyone with celiac disease can still get sick from eating them.

These hard lessons inspired me to dig deeper. I started redesigning not just her daily menus but also specific recipes to ensure they met her unique needs. Potato salad became one of my first experiments—I reimagined it to eliminate ingredients that could trigger her symptoms while still keeping it delicious. Pumpkin recipes followed, each
meticulously tweaked and tested to ensure every bite was safe and satisfying.


Every recipe is a puzzle—one that I carefully solve with love, trial, and error. Along the way, I’ve learned to pull out ingredients, swap others in, and find innovative ways to ensure the meals I create are as nutritious as they are flavorful.


In the next issue, I’ll share some of my redesigned recipes, along with the thought process behind each tweak. From ingredient swaps to preparation tricks, you’ll get a glimpse into how I’ve turned seemingly impossible food challenges into solutions.

Because at the end of the day, cooking isn’t just about food—it’s about care, creativity, and the determination to make life better for the ones you love.
